Running Game Shines in Scrimmage
Aug. 18, 2012
EL PASO - UTEP's running backs covered 251 yards and scored five times in the Miners' second scrimmage of the fall on Saturday in the Sun Bowl.
Sophomore Nathan Jeffery led with 103 yards on five carries and scored twice including an explosive 65-yard touchdown run. Freshman Autrey Golden gained 80 yards on the ground on nine carries and added another two TDs and Laquintus Dowell and Xay Williams ran seven times and combined for 68 yards.
"The first team offense and first team defense both looked good," head coach Mike Price said. "We've got some weapons on offense. We've got some speed. [Autrey] Golden and Xay Williams are going to play, L.A. [Dowell] is going to play and [Josh] Bell is going to play. We pulled Nathan Jeffery out after the first 12 minutes."
Senior QB Nick Lamaison completed 9-of-16 passes for 82 yards. Freshman Garret Simpson connected on 7-of-10 attempts for 62 yards and senior Carson Meger finished 6-of-11 for 51 yards and an interception.
There were seven players who had at least one reception. Sophomore TE Eric Tomlinson led with four receptions for 45 yards.
After missing the first five days of practice, kicker Dakota Warren kicked a pair of field goals from 44 and 52 yards.
"It was really good to be here in a game environment for some of our players, particularly our backup centers," Price said. "We only had two tight ends and they got plenty of work. We have plenty of backs to go around and I thought Dakota [Warren] kicked well."
The Miners open the 2012 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 1, against Oklahoma. Tickets are on sale at all Ticket Master locations, the UTEP Ticket Center or by calling (915) 747-5234.
