The long-running I-10 rivalry series between University of Texas - El Paso (UTEP) and New Mexico State University (NMSU) will bear the name of SONIC® ® America's Drive-In® starting with the 2010-11 athletic year.
SONIC®, America's Drive-In® was announced as the title sponsor for the Battle of I-10 in a press conference on Thursday at the SONIC Drive-In in Anthony, N.M.
"SONIC has enjoyed a long-standing history with both schools and is excited to take that relationship to the next level to include the fans of New Mexico State, UTEP and SONIC," said Donna Volz, senior marketing director for The Merritt Group, the franchise group that owns and operates SONIC Drive-Ins in El Paso and Las Cruces.
The two-year partnership between the neighboring universities and SONIC Drive-Ins in El Paso and Las Cruces will encompass matchups in football, men's basketball and women's basketball. The Miners and Aggies will meet for the 88th time on the gridiron in El Paso on Sept. 18.
In the coming weeks, fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite team via each school's athletic website after receiving a special code on their SONIC receipt.
