Texas Football Magazine Honors Thomas Howard
UTEP linebacker Thomas Howard has been named the preseason Defensive Player of the Year in the state of Texas by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine. The publication is slated to hit newsstands on June 20.
It marks the first time in the magazine’s 46-year history that UTEP has had a preseason player of the year on either side of the ball.
UTEP is featured on the cover of the magazine another first for the program. A photo of head coach Mike Price occupies the upper right corner with the words “This Price is Right For UTEP.”
The 6-3, 240-pound Howard was also selected the best linebacker in the state and a first team All-State defensive player by Dave Campbell’s magazine. He earned second team All-WAC honors in 2004, totaling 62 tackles, 14 tackles for losses, eight sacks and two interceptions.
The Lubbock native has posted 211 tackles, 27 tackles for losses, 10 sacks and three interceptions in 36 games for the Miners. His tackle for loss total rates seventh in school annals.
Other Miners honored by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine include wide receiver Jayson Boyd (second team All-Texas Offense), safety Quintin Demps (second team All-Texas Defense) and tackle Chris Mineo (second team All-Texas Defense).
