Miners Increase Workload to 100 Plays in Second Scrimmage of the Spring
April 10, 2010
Robert Soleyjacks had a fumble return for a touchdown on the very first play of UTEP's second scrimmage of the spring, while quarterbacks Carson Meger and Tim Curry each threw for scores on a sun-soaked morning in the Sun Bowl.
The Miners ran 100 plays in Saturday's scrimmage, an increase from 80 the previous week. Meger hit Evan Davis for a five-yard touchdown pass, and Curry hooked up with Pierce Hunter for an acrobatic 20-yard grab to conclude the scoring.
"The offense and defense both came in with more intensity and enthusiasm (than last week)," UTEP coach Mike Price said. "I'm pleased that we're improving every day, but we're not where we want to be. We're playing better on defense and we got a lot of kicking in today."
Kevin Lopez and Mike Scott each connected on a couple of field goal tries for UTEP, which has nine spring practices in the books and six remaining culminating with the annual Orange and Blue game on Saturday, April 24.
The only bad news for the Miners on Saturday was the loss of starting tight end Jonny Moore for the remainder of the spring with a dislocated shoulder. Elijah Goldtrap filled in with five catches for 32 yards in the scrimmage.
"Moore is a huge, huge loss," Price said. "Goldtrap went the whole day, and we'll probably move Hunter (from wide receiver to tight end). He's not a great blocker, but he's 235 pounds and he'll be able to split out as a tight end."
While Donald Buckram was "a little sore" according to Price and missed the scrimmage for the second straight week, a stable of young running backs filled in capably. True freshman Cameron Choice paced the ground game with 14 carries for 65 yards. Choice, junior Blake Dubose and senior Jason Williams each reeled off runs for double-digit yards.
Meger completed 15-of-24 passes for 185 yards, and Curry finished 11-of-23 for 105 yards. The receiving leaders were Russell Carr (4-83), Lavorick Williams (2-45) and Kris Adams (3-42).
The Miners will work out at Glory Field on Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
