UTEP Post-Game Notes
The 85-yard pass from Trevor Vittatoe to Kris Adams in the first quarter was the ninth-longest completion in school history and the longest since Jordan Palmer threw a 91-yard pass to Johnnie Lee Higgins, Jr. at Fresno State in 2004. It was also the longest play from scrimmage for the Miners in 2008.
Trevor Vittatoe moved into fourth place on UTEP’s career total offense list with 5,654 yards. Billy Stevens is in third place with 5,696 yards.
Vittatoe finished the night with 410 yards passing, a career high (by one yard) and the eighth-top single game total in school annals. His previous best was 409 yards passing against East Carolina in 2007.
Vittatoe is the fourth Miner player to have multiple 400-yard passing games (he has two). Sammy Garza and Jordan Palmer each had three and Brooks Dawson had two in their careers.
Vittatoe now has 52 career touchdown passes, the second-top total in school history behind Jordan Palmer’s 88. He passed Billy Stevens (51) on the list tonight.
Vittatoe has 2,599 yards passing in 2008 (eighth-best seasonal total in school history) and 27 passing touchdowns (second-best total, record is 29 by Jordan Palmer in 2005).
Jose Martinez is now 13-of-14 on field goal attempts from 40-49 yards in his career with the Miners.
Martinez kicked five field goals to tie the school record. He also had five field goals versus East Carolina in 2007. Reagan Schneider kicked five field goals versus Houston in 2005.
Martinez scored 18 points, tying his career high originally established against East Carolina a year ago.
Martinez now has 192 career points to rank fourth among UTEP kickers and tied for seventh all-time.
Martinez has 20 field goals this season (second on the school lists) and 37 in his career (fourth). He has 37 PATs this season (tied for sixth) and 81 in his career (tied for fourth).
Martinez has scored 97 points this season, the sixth-best total in UTEP history.
With three touchdown catches tonight, Kris Adams now has 10 in 2008, tied for the sixth-best seasonal total in school annals.
Adams’ three touchdown receptions ties the second-top game total in school history, shared by several players. The school record for TD catches in a game is four by Volley Murphy versus BYU in 1967.
Adams had a career-high 145 yards receiving.
The 40-yard catch by Tufick Shadrawy late in the second quarter was a career long reception. The 73 yards receiving for Shadrawy tonight were also a personal best.
UTEP’s defense held SMU to 201 yards, the lowest total since Oct. 7, 2006. Coincidentally, that effort also came against the Mustangs. In that game, SMU finished with 190 yards of total offense.
The Miners’ defense has accounted for seven interceptions the past two games, marking the highest combined total in consecutive games since racking up eight to open the 2005 season.
UTEP forced six turnovers, the highest single-game effort since it created seven giveaways in a 56-48 setback at Rice on Nov. 3, 2007.
UTEP won on “Senior Night” for the first time since 2004, when it also beat SMU, 57-27, in the Sun Bowl. The Miners lost their home finale to UAB in 2005, Memphis in 2006 and Southern Miss in 2007.
UTEP finishes 3-3 at home in 2008, including 3-1 in Conference USA play. The Miners have gone .500 or better at home in five straight seasons for the first time since the Sun Bowl’s inception in 1963.
UTEP now holds a 5-4 edge over SMU in El Paso. The Miners have won five of the last six meetings with the Mustangs in the Sun Bowl.
Tonight’s win was Mike Price’s 30th as head coach of the Miners. He has a 159-150 career mark and a 30-28 record at UTEP.
UTEP has won consecutive games in November for the first time since 2005. That was also the last time the Miners posted two victories in November.
Tonight’s attendance was 30,271. The Miners conclude the season with a total of 223,778 fans in six home games for an average of 37,296. That is an increase from the 2007 season when UTEP averaged 36,568 fans.
