UTEP Rides 38 First-Half Points to Win Over Texas Southern

EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- UTEP scored on its first five possessions and cruised to a 52-12 victory over Texas Southern on Saturday night.
The Miners led 24-0 after one quarter and had a 38-0 advantage at halftime.
Marcus Thomas had 105 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead UTEP (2-2). It was UTEP's first 100-yard rushing performance in 16 games.
Thomas scored on a 15-yard run on UTEP's first possession then zigzagged his way 27 yards for a touchdown with 5:50 left in the first half. That was Thomas' last carry.
Miners quarterback Trevor Vittatoe, playing just a quarter and a half, completed 10 of 16 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Jeff Moturi, seeing about the same amount of action as Vittatoe, caught two passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns.
Texas Southern (0-4) of the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) scored in the third quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Tino Edgecomb to Williams Osborne.
