Halakilangi Muagututi'a is in his second year as a member of the UTEP coaching staff. Muagututi'a serves as the Miners' special teams program coordinator.

A former Miner, Muagututi'a spent eight years playing in various professional leagues before coming back to El Paso. He was a volunteer coach at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord, Calif., serving as defensive coordinator from 2004-05.

He played at UTEP for two seasons (1996-97), earning first team All-WAC honors as a strong safety his senior year. He led the Miners in tackles in 1997 with 114. He started his collegiate career at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

Muagututi'a earned his bachelor's degree in Multidisciplinary Studies in 2007 and is currently pursuing his master's degree in Early Childhood Education, both from UTEP.

A native of Compton, Calif., he and his wife, Lenora, have four children -- Angelo ((18), a defensive back at Utah State, Tyanna (12), Emeli (3) and Halakilangi Jr. (1).
