El Paso native and former Miner Austin Contreras joined the UTEP staff for the 2011 campaign, serving as defensive program coordinator.

A fan favorite during his playing days (2007-10), Contreras notched 20 tackles as a senior and earned a pair of starting assignments. He posted seven stops as the Miners beat eventual C-USA West Division champion SMU, 28-14, to secure bowl eligibility for the first time in five years. Another of Contreras' memorable games came in 2009 at Texas, where he was credited with five tackles.

Contreras was a nominee for the 2010 Rudy Award, honoring Division I football players who bring "something extra" to the team.

A standout in the classroom as well, Contreras was a multiple selection to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or better. He earned his bachelor's degree in History in 2011.

Contreras was an All-District 1-5A and second team All-City linebacker as a senior at Americas High School in the Sun City.
