UTEP's state-of-the art Foster Stevens Basketball Center, in the works for nearly three years, officially opened on Wednesday, April 22, 2009. 

UTEP athletic department donors and the media got their first look at the facility, and more than 1,200 fans toured the sparkling new building the following day.

UTEP announced plans to build the $14.3 million, 43,000-square foot complex on June 15, 2006. Grounbreaking was held on Aug. 15, 2007.

Two lead gifts of $3 million each were pledged by Paul L. Foster and Jeff and Sharon Stevens towards the completion of the facility. Paul Foster is the President and CEO of Western Refining Inc., and Jeff Stevens is Executive Vice President of the company.

The facility features two practice courts, a strength and conditioning center, sports medicine center, academic/film rooms, coaches' offices, locker rooms, equipment room and lounges for the UTEP men's and women's basketball programs.

The building is located on the corner of Mesa Street and Glory Road, adjacent to the Don Haskins Center. It was designed and constructed to reflect the Bhutanese architecture featured throughout the entire UTEP campus.

For years, the UTEP men's and women's teams have been routinely displaced from the Haskins Center for practices due to concerts and other events in the arena, which has been in existence since 1977.

Now they won't have to compete with other activities - and themselves - for court time.

The entrance to the facility is a shrine to the 1966 Texas Western College national championship team, complete with a large mural depicting highlights from the season and other memorabilia on display.

The center is the third major facility project completed in the past eight years. The Larry K. Durham Sports Center opened its doors in August 2002 while the Helen of Troy Softball Complex was completed in May 2005.
