UTEP forward Julian Washburn was chosen the Conference USA Freshman of the Week on Monday, the first honor for a Miner player this season.

Washburn collected a career-high 16 points as UTEP evened the SONIC Battle of I-10 Rivalry Series with a 73-69 win over New Mexico State on Sunday at the Don Haskins Center. The Miners lost to the Aggies, 89-73, in Las Cruces on Nov. 19. Washburn made 7-of-13 shots while adding three rebounds, four assists and a block while playing 37 minutes versus NMSU. Washburn's defensive efforts helped hold Christian Kabongo, the Aggies' second-leading scorer (16.1 ppg), to nine points on 3-for-10 shooting.

The Duncanville, Texas native leads the Miners in scoring this season with 10.3 points per game.

Memphis sophomore guard Will Barton was appointed the C-USA Player of the Week, beating out UTEP's Gabe McCulley who established career-highs in points (18), rebounds (13), assists (seven) and steals (three) versus the Aggies.
