UTEP Hosts Dangerous Georgia Southern on Tuesday
Nov. 16, 2008
UTEP will shoot for its fifth straight 2-0 start to a season on Tuesday when Georgia Southern comes to the Don Haskins Center.
Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. MST. While the Miners are 1-0, Georgia Southern already has three games under its belt. The Eagles beat Houston, 65-63, in the 2K Sports Classic in Durham, N.C. last week before falling to host Duke, 97-54. Georgia Southern also trounced Reinhardt, 96-61, in its home opener on Friday.
The Eagles were 20-12 last season, including 13-7 in the Southern Conference (second place). Nine letterwinners and two starters are back from that club. Three Eagles are averaging in double figures in scoring -- sophomore guard Willie Powers (12.3 ppg), senior forward Trumaine Pearson (11.0 ppg) and senior guard Julian Allen (10.0 ppg).
UTEP received a career high 19 points from Julyan Stone in its season opener. The Miners should learn in the next day or two whether they will have the services of senior forward Tavaris Watts on Tuesday. Watts injured his knee against Texas Southern and an MRI will be performed on Monday.
The Miners have never faced Georgia Southern, but they are 2-0 versus Southern Conference schools. UTEP is 1-0 against Appalachian State and 1-0 against Samford with games played during the 1985-86 and 1998-99 seasons, respectively.
UTEP has posted a 4-0 mark in Tuesday games under coach Tony Barbee. The only other day of the week that the Miners haven't lost on under Barbee is Monday, because they have yet to play a Monday game under his direction. That will change next Monday when UNLV comes to town.
