UTEP Strengthens Backcourt With Addition of Konner Tucker

Konner Tucker, a 6-4 guard from Fort Worth, Texas, has been added to the UTEP basketball roster for the 2012-13 season. Tucker is a graduate student pursuing his Masters of Leadership Studies and would have one year of eligibility with the Miners.

Tucker was the leading scorer at Sam Houston State last season, averaging 12.0 points per game. He shot 37 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range and 72 percent from the line for a team that finished 13-19. Tucker also collected 3.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.7 steals per outing. He ranked fourth in the Southland Conference in three pointers made per game (2.2) and eighth in minutes (31.8 avg.).

Tucker scored in double figures 23 times in 32 games for the Bearkats, including his career-best 25 points versus Northern Arizona on Dec. 20, 2011. He made 6-of-10 three-point shots in that game.

He redshirted the 2010-11 season at SHSU after transferring from Wake Forest. Tucker appeared in six games for the Demon Deacons during the 2009-10 season, tallying 13 points and four rebounds over 31 minutes.

Tucker spent the 2008-09 season at Lon Morris College, contributing 16.2 ppg to garner Region XIV first team All-Conference honors. He paced the league and rated 18th in the Division I junior college ranks in free throw percentage (.835). Tucker shot 46 percent from the field and 42 percent from three-point territory as Lon Morris posted a 26-6 mark and captured the Region XIV regular season title.

He graduated from R.L. Paschal High School summa cum laude with a 4.1 grade point average in 2008. Tucker was a three-year starter at Paschal, finishing his career as the school's all-time leading scorer. Tucker averaged 28.7 points per game as a senior (2007-08) to lead all Fort Worth/Dallas area schools in scoring. He was a two-time unanimous first team 4-5A All-District choice, and was named the District Offensive Player of the Year as a senior. He was appointed to the 2008 TABC Class 5A All-Region Team. Tucker was the second-leading scorer in the Metroplex as a junior with 23.6 points per outing.



His father, Mark Tucker, played basketball at Oklahoma State (1977-79) and still ranks among the school's all-time leaders for free throw percentage, minutes per game, points per game and field goal percentage. He set the Cowboys' single-season record for free throw percentage (.912) during the 1977-78 season and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls.

The Miners will open their 2012-13 season with the Orange and White scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Don Haskins Center. Admission is free.
