UTEP's Moultrie Selected to Attend USA U19 National Team Trials
May 28, 2009
UTEP forward Arnett Moultrie is one of 17 players chosen to attend the 2009 USA U19 National Team Trials, slated for June 16-18 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The athletes, born on or after Jan. 1, 1990, will compete for one of 12 roster spots on the 2009 USA U19 World Championship Team. Following the trials, the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee is expected to announce finalists for the 12-member USA U19 World Championship Team roster. Training camp for the selected finalists will begin June 19, with the 12-member USA roster being announced prior to the team's departure for New Zealand on June 25. The FIBA U19 World Championship is set for July 2-12 in Auckland, New Zealand. "This is a tremendous opportunity for Arnett to compete in a tryout setting against an elite group of college players, with the end reward representing his country in international play," UTEP coach Tony Barbee said. The 6-11, 225-pound Moultrie was one of the nation's top freshmen in 2008-09, averaging 8.8 points and 8.2 rebounds while starting 34 games for the Miners. He was first among all Conference USA freshmen in rebounding, and fifth nationally. Moultrie ended the year with 302 rebounds, making him only the third player in school history - and the first since the 1960's - to secure 300 boards in a season. The Memphis native had six double-doubles, the second-top freshman total in UTEP annals. He was the first freshman to lead UTEP in rebounding since Anthony Burns in 1977-78. Moultrie established season-highs for points (19) and rebounds (18) at Houston, and duplicated the 19-point effort against Oregon State in the deciding game three of the CBI Championship Series. Joining Moultrie on the roster are Al-Farouq Aminu (Wake Forest), Kenny Boynton (Florida), Darryl Bryant (West Virginia), DeAngelo Casto (Washington State), Dominic Cheek (Villanova), Seth Curry (Duke), Drew Gordon (UCLA), Gordon Hayward (Butler), Darius Miller (Kentucky), Ralph Sampson III (Minnesota), John Shurna (Northwestern), Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas), Howard Thompkins (Georgia), Klay Thompson (Washington State), Kemba Walker (Connecticut) and Terrico White (Mississippi).
The coach of the USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team is Pittsburgh's Jamie Dixon. His assistants are Chris Lowery (Southern Illinois) and Matt Painter (Purdue). |
