UTEP Athletics Looks Back at the Twenty Greatest Men's Basketball Games of the Decade
Jan. 8, 2010
From 2000 through 2009, the UTEP basketball team recorded 181 victories and made six postseason tournament appearances. The decade produced the school's all-time leading scorer - twice (Brandon Wolfram and Stefon Jackson). It also produced "Fili, O.T. and J-Will," the "Oh oh oh oh oh Gio" song (sung to the tune of "Hangin' Tough" by New Kids on the Block), and Randy Culpepper's gravity-defying tomahawk dunks. How do you pick the 20 greatest UTEP games of the decade? There have been so many outstanding individual and team performances, so many great coaches, so many buzzer-beating climaxes. The first criteria was that only wins would be considered. There have been a lot of great games that ended in defeat, but who wants to relive them, anyway? We poured through the season-by-season results in the back of the media guide, started with a list of about 40 games and began whittling them down. Needless to say, there were a lot of great games that didn't make the cut. Some of the games featured fantastic finishes. Others were simply dominant efforts versus outstanding opponents. There are rivalry games on this list, and games that were critical for postseason tournament positioning. Coming up with 20 games wasn't difficult. Ranking them, however, was much harder. You could make a case for any of these games being in the top five. Whether you agree with the list or not, we hope it brings back a lot of great memories. We'd like to thank all of the UTEP coaches and players - past and present - who took the time to participate in this project. And a special thank you goes to Brian Kanof, Richard T. Clifton and the sports information departments at Rice University, Southern Miss University and the University of Nevada for providing photos from these great games. Enjoy ... and keep an eye out for UTEP's 20 greatest football and women's basketball games of the decade, coming soon to utepathletics.com! View UTEP's Greatest Games of the Decade
