Phil Johnson reunited with coach Tim Floyd at UTEP for the 2010-11 season. He previously served as a member of Floyd's staff at the University of New Orleans (1991-93), with the NBA's Chicago Bulls (1999-02) and at USC. Johnson was an assistant coach at USC for five seasons (2005-10), working with Floyd for four (2005-09).

Johnson's tenure with the Trojans produced 101 wins, three NCAA Tournament berths (2007-09) and a PAC-10 Tournament title (2009). USC reached the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament in 2007. In addition to his coaching and recruiting duties, Johnson was instrumental in the development of the Trojan big men.

A 29-year veteran of the coaching fraternity, Johnson was the head coach at San Jose State for four seasons (1998-99, 2002-05). In his first year with the Spartans, Johnson engineered a nine-game improvement in wins.

Johnson's coaching resume also includes stops at East Central Oklahoma University (1982-85), Northern Oklahoma Junior College (1985-87), Seminole Junior College (1987-90), Tulsa (1990-91) and Arizona (1993-98).

In five seasons at Arizona, Johnson helped the Wildcats to a 133-35 record, the 1997 national title and five NCAA Tournament berths. He worked specifically with standout post players Joseph Blair, A.J. Bramlett, Ben Davis, Bennett Davison and Ray Owes, all of whom were selected in the NBA Draft.

His first assistant coaching job came at his alma mater, East Central Oklahoma, and produced three straight conference championships. The Tigers reached the NAIA Division IX finals in 1984.

Johnson landed his first head coaching job at the age of 28 at Northern Oklahoma Junior College. He was also the head coach at Seminole Junior College, guiding the Seminoles to a state championship in 1988 and conference title in 1989.

Johnson graduated from East Central Oklahoma in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in education. He added a master's degree in education from Henderson State in 1982. As a player, he was co-captain of the 1979 ECOU team.
