Mike Babul is in his third tour of duty with UTEP head coach Tony Barbee. He also worked with Barbee at the University of Memphis during the 2003-04 season, after playing for him at the University of Massachusetts previously.
His duties with the Miners are multifold, from coordinating the team's annual summer camp to arranging travel plans and ordering team apparel. Babul also assists with academics and on-campus recruiting.
Babul came to UTEP after spending the 2005-06 campaign as coordinator of basketball operations at Drexel University. His role at Drexel included coordinating team travel, organizing team purchases, assisting with on-campus recruiting and directing summer camps.
He also worked at Youngstown State as an assistant during the 2004-05 season, after spending one year as assistant director of basketball operations at Memphis.
Babul got his start in coaching as an assistant at Seekonk High School in Massachusetts.
He graduated from UMass in 2000 with a degree in sports management. Babul lettered for the Minutemen from 1997-2000, serving as team captain his senior year. He was a part of two NCAA Tournament teams while at UMass. His collegiate honors included being appointed to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Defensive Team and All-Academic Team on three occasions each.
Babul also enjoyed a distinguished prep career. He was named the 1996 Massachusetts Player of the Year as a senior at North Attleboro High School, and was a fourth team Parade Magazine All-American as well.
Babul comes from a basketball family. His identical twin brother, Jon, played at Georgia Tech from 1996-2001 and is currently on the Yellow Jackets' staff. His father was a long-time high school coach in Massachusetts.
