EL PASO – Cross country’s Risper Kimaiyo was named a recipient of the Conference USA Spirit of Service award the league announced Tuesday.

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.

Kimaiyo is a three-time All-America selection who became the first woman in program and conference history to claim back-to-back Mountain Region titles. The 2010 C-USA Athlete of the Year clocked the 25th-best time of 20:12.7 at the 2011 NCAA Championship, giving her three Top-25 finishes at the national meet.

While at UTEP, Kimaiyo has been a member of SAAC and Miner GEMS for three consecutive years. She has participated in community projects such as Project MOVE (UTEP's campus community initiative), Let's SAAC Hunger, La Posada Home and the West Texas Food Bank. The junior from Iten, Kenya, helped SAAC raise over 6,000 lbs for the West Texas Food Bank this year.

A member of the 2011 Conference USA All-Academic cross country team, Kimaiyo maintains a 3.67 GPA as a pre-nursing major.

The Spirit of Service award will be presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.
