UTEP Places 14th At NCAA Championships

UTEP’s Stephen Samoei and Japheth Ng’ojoy gained All-America honors as the Miner cross country team finished 14th at the NCAA Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., Monday.

UTEP scored 418 points, finishing closely behind BYU (416 points), Kansas (412 points) and Ohio State (406 points). Wisconsin ran away with the title, scoring 37 points, 68 fewer than second-place Arkansas.

“This is a major accomplishment for this team, consisting of mostly freshmen,” said head coach Paul Ereng. “No team in the competition was this young. It was just a commendable job.

“Our young team finished 14th in the nation. We wanted to finish in the top 10, but all and all we had two All-American and everyone did a great job.”

Samoei and Ng’ojoy each finished in the top 25 in a field that included 253 runners.

“Patrick (Mutai), Japheth and Stephen where right there (with the lead pack) by the fourth mile. At that point Patrick began to tighten up and started dropping,” said Ereng. “Japheth and Stephen stayed right there and moved into the top 15 -- ninth for Japheth and 12th for Stephen -- with a half mile or so remaining before a final surge.”

Samoei was 20th overall and the 16th team finisher, running the 10k race in 30:07.5. Ng’ojoy ran 22nd overall and was 18th among team finishers in 30:08.0. He was the youngest to finish the race and the third freshman to do so.

“Both Stephen and Japheth rank very well. They stayed with the top 10 and never game up,” said Ereng. “It is a tough, hard fight to finish in the top 25 with competition of this caliber.”

All-Americans Mircea Bogdan and Mutai were the next finishers for the Miners. Bogdan, who had been battling the flu, was 118th overall and 90th among team racers in 31:08.2. Mutai experienced back problems midway through the race and was 126th overall and 96th among team competitors. He was timed at 31:12.8.

Freshman Dominic Kiprono Tanui was the Miners final point scorer, taking 236th overall (198th among team finishers) in 32:33.6. Tanui had missed all but two competitions this fall recovering from injuries.

Joe Muoz of Fabens crossed in 32:51.9 to take 241st overall (203rd among team finishers). Freshman Elias Koech -- who runs the 800 during track season -- dropped out of the competition.
