Cross Country Heads to NCAA Mountain Regional

EL PASO, TEXAS – Reigning Mountain Regional champion Risper Kimaiyo will look to defend her titles on Saturday, Nov. 13 when the UTEP men’s and women’s cross country teams take the field in Provo, Utah for the 2011 Mountain Regional Championships.

Kimaiyo became the first UTEP woman in program history to win a NCAA cross country regional meet crossing the finish line with a course record time of 20:02. The All-American was named the 2010 Mountain Region Athlete of the Year following her breakout sophomore campaign leading the women to a seventh place finish.

Kimaiyo is supported by junior Karina Garcia completed the 6K race at last year’s meet with a time of 22:16. Freshman Jackline Ekai crossed the finish line 29th with a time of 18:23 at the 2011 Cross Country Conference USA Championships. Rounding out the women’s team is Kitria Stewart and Laura Delgado.

Leading the men is 2011 C-USA Champion Justice Chirchir who finished with a personal-best time of 23:39. The junior finished 29th at last years meet posting a time 30:44.

Following closely behind is Elkana Rotich who earned runner-up honors at the 2011 C-USA Championships with a time of 23:51. Rotich finished 22nd at last year’s regional meet with a time of 30:26 The Miners expect a boost from Solomon Gardea and Abel Koskey each clocked a season-best at the 2011 C-USA Championships with a time of 24:30 and 24:36, respectively.

Newcomers Juan Blanco and Ramon Garcia complete the Miners six-man squad.
