UTEP Gears Up for NCAA Mountain Regional Competition

El Paso- The UTEP cross country team is ready to compete in the 2012 NCAA Mountain Regional meet in Fort Collins, Colo on Friday.

The teams that will be taking the course is regional leader Colorado, BYU, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, Air Force, Colorado State, Texas Tech, Weber State, Montana State, Wyoming, Utah Valley, Utah State and New Mexico State.

The women will be kicking off the race at 12 p.m. (MT) in the 6K and the men’s team will follow at 1 p.m. in the 10K race.

The men’s team heads into the competition ranked sixth in the Mountain Region. Leading the men’s team is Anthony Rotich, who has been unstoppable posting four first place finishes out of five meets this season. The freshman had a stellar race at the 2012 NCAA Pre-National competition, where he clocked in a personal-best of 23:01 in the 8K defeating 271 runners. Rotich most recently claimed the crown at the 2012 Conference USA Championships recording a time of 23:32.2 in the men’s 8K race. He has earned multiple awards this season including C-USA Freshman of the Year and three C-USA Athlete of the Week honors.

Teammate Elphas Maiyo has also had an excellent season helping the Miners claim several meet titles. The freshman registered a personal-best of 23:54.2 at the Pre-Nationals battle. Maiyo was named to the C-USA first team after finishing sixth at the conference championships with a time of 24:19.0 in the 8K race.

Also on the men’s squad is Elkana Rotich, who once again earned C-USA first team recognition, after crossing the finish line fifth with a time of 24:18.9 posted at conference. The senior took third place at the Lori Fitzgerald meet helping the team finish ahead of I-10 rival NM State.

On the women’s side, Risper Kimaiyo is getting ready to conclude her senior campaign on a high note. The three-time All-American is know to dominate the course and has continued to do so this season claiming three top-finishes thus far. The senior took her third C-USA cross country crown this year as she posted a personal-best of 16:42.8 in the 5K. Kimaiyo was also named Outstanding Senior of the Meet at the conference competition.   



Also running on the women’s team is senior Karina Garcia, who was the second collegiate runner to cross the finish line at the Lori Fitzgerald meet with a time of 18:48.42 in the 5K race. This is the last season that Garcia will be competing in the Orange and Blue.
