Cross Country Team Heads to Pre-Nationals

El Paso – The cross country team will return to the field as they compete in the NCAA Division I Pre-National Cross Country meet on Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
It will be a highly competitive field with 15 nationally ranked teams participating in Louisville, Ky. The men’s team will be racing in the red seeded race set to begin at 7:30 a.m. (MT). The women’s squad will kick off the race at 8:15 a.m.
The UTEP men’s team will be taking on a total of 39 schools, which include: No. 3 BYU, No. 7 Colorado, No. 9 Tulsa, No. 14 Florida State and No. 15 Oregon.
The last time the Miners took the field they finished fourth overall at the Cowboy Jamboree, where freshman Anthony Rotich took second place clocking in a time of 24:29.26. Freshman Elphas Maiyo recorded a personal-best of 24:57.76 in the 8K race. While, senior Elkana Rotich concluded the race with a time of 25:25.22.
The women’s team will be challenging 38 teams including No.1 Florida State, No. 4 Oregon, No. 8 Michigan and No. 18 Colorado.
Leading the women’s team is All-American Risper Kimaiyo who clocked in a season-best time of 17:17.79 at the Cowboy Jamboree. The senior took second place overall in the 5K race that featured 127 competitors. The distance runner has earned three, Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors this season.
Also highlighting the squad is senior Karina Garcia who posted a season-best of 18:33 and finished fifth at the Kachina Classic.
