Miners to Challenge No. 2 Oklahoma State

El Paso – The cross country team returns to action on Sept. 29 at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.

The men’s team will be competing at 7 a.m. (MT) in the university men’s 8K race. The Miners will be going head-to-head against No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Oklahoma, Wichita State, Texas Christian, Oral Roberts, North Texas, Missouri Southern, Abilene Christian, Western State and Iowa Central CC.

All-American Anthony Rotich leads UTEP after posting two first-place finishes and earning back-to-back Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors. The freshman clocked in a personal-best of 24:15 in the 8K at the Kachina Classic.

Teammate Elphas Maiyo keeps on shining, as he was the second collegiate runner to cross the finish line at the Kachina Classic with a time of 25:13. El Paso native Juan Blanco also had a stellar showing, posting a season-best of 25:42 as the Miners claimed the meet title.

The women’s team will be taking the course at 9:15 a.m. in the 5K race. UTEP will be going up against No. 23 Oklahoma State, Missouri State, Oklahoma, Colorado Mines, Oral Roberts, Western State, Wichita State and Abilene Christian.

On the women’s side, three time cross country All-American Risper Kimaiyo continues to excel earning two her fourth consecutive meet title at the Kachina Classic with a season-best time of 17:18. The senior has been named C-USA Athlete of the Week twice during the 2012 campaign.

Senior Karina Garcia is entering her last season as a Miner. The Mexican native was the second collegiate runner to cross the finish line at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitation recording a time of 18:48.42 in the women’s 5K race.
