Cross Country Striving for Success This Upcoming Season

EL PASO- The UTEP cross country team will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Lobos Invitational this Saturday at the UNM North Golf Course.

The men’s 5k race is set to begin at 9:55 a.m. (MT) followed by the women’s 5k which is stated to start at 10:30 am.

Returning for the Miners will be sophomore All American standout Anthony Rotich. The distance runner had an outstanding 2012 cross country season, earning individual titles at the C-USA Championships and Pre-Nationals during his first season with the Orange and Blue. The sophomore ended his 2012 campaign with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA championships clocking in a career best of 29:13.5 in the 10k.

Joining Rotich on the course this weekend is Elphas Maiyo. The sophomore earned C-USA first team honors in his first season with the squad. The Kenyan native clocked in a personal best of 23:54.2 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in the 8k.

Rounding up the men’s squad is El Paso native Soloman Gardea, who makes his return to the track after undergoing hip surgery. In 2011 the distance runner garnered ALL-C-USA second team honors with a time of 24:30 in the 8k.

On the women’s side the Miners will be taking nine competitors to represent UTEP on the course.

Featuring the squad is track standout Janice Jackson. This will be the first time that the All-American will be competing for the cross country team.
