Cross Country Opens Season at Home

EL PASO – The UTEP cross country team will kick of the 2012 campaign on Friday at the annual Lori Fitzgerald Invitational at Emerald Springs Golf Course.

UTEP will be hosting the city’s elite high school teams to compete in the 27th annual Lori Fitzgerald Invitational. The girls 5K race is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. (MT) followed by the boys 5K at 3:15 p.m. The elite girls 5K race will start at 4 p.m. and the boys elite competition will kick-off at 4:30 p.m.

The Miners will run at 5 p.m. with the women’s 5K, followed by the men’s 5K at 5:30 p.m.  

Highlighting the women’s team this season is three time cross country All-American Risper Kimaiyo. Kimaiyo is entering her final season as a Miner and looks to continue her success on the course. The senior took her third consecutive crown at last years Lori Fitzgerald meet, posting a time of 17:41. Kimaiyo was named the 2011 NCAA Mountain Athlete of the Year after winning her second title with a time of 20:35.2 in the 6K race. 

Also returning to action is senior Karina Garcia, who recorded a silver finish at the 2011 Lori Fitzgerald crossing the finish line with a time of 18:57.1.

On the men’s side, senior Elkana Rotich will pace the Orange and Blue this season. Rotich had a stellar season in 2011, earning All-Conference USA first team honors after finishing second at the championship meet with a season-best of 23:51.1 in the 8K. The Kenyan native represented UTEP at the 2011 NCAA Championship meet posting a time of 32:07 in the 10K.
