UTEP Cross Country Opens 2011 Season at Lobo Invitational

EL PASO - The UTEP cross country teams will open the 2011 season this weekend when they travel to Albuquerque, N.M., on September 3, 2011.
The New Mexico Lobo Cross Country Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico, is set to begin at 9:55 a.m. MDT with the men competing in the 8K race. The women follow at 10:30 a.m. with the 5K race.
The UTEP women come into the 2011 campaign ranked seventh in the USTFCCA preseason poll for the Mountain Region.
Risper Kimaiyo eclipsed her own meet record of 17:21 set a year ago at the Lobo Invitational with a time of 17:00 for the top finish in the women’s 5K race.
The men enter the season ranked 11th in the Mountain Region preseason poll after placing second at the 2010 Conference-USA championships.
The team returns four runners from last year’s squad and adds two newcomers (Juan Blanco and Ramon Garcia).
Leading the Miners is C-USA champion, Elkana Rotich, who took the 2010 crown with a time of 23:30. The Kenyan native earned the league’s 2010 Male Athlete of the Year after finishing in 22nd place at the NCAA Mountain Regional.
The Miners will return home to compete in the 2011 Lori Fitzgerald on Sept. 10 at the Chamizal Memorial National Park. The women will kick-off with the 5K at 8:30 a.m. followed by the men at 9:15 a.m. with the 7K.
