Kimaiyo Claims Crown at 2011 NCAA Mountain Region

PROVO, UTAH - All-American Risper Kimaiyo became the first woman in program history to claim back-to-back titles with a time of 20:35 at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Mountain Regional in Provo, Utah on Saturday. 

The UTEP women’s squad finished with 367 points to place 14th at the East Bay Golf Course. Junior Karina Garcia was the second Miner to cross the finish line with a time of 22:43. Freshman Jackline Ekai clocked in at 23:16 for 57th place and Laura Delgado posted a time of 24:16. Kitria Stewart completed the 6K race at 24:34.

Leading the men’s team was Elkana Rotich crossing the finish line with a time of 31:03 to place 14th overall. Following closely behind him, was 2011 Conference USA champion Justice Chirchir posting a time of 31:12 finishing the race in 20th place. 

Sophomore Abel Koskey finished with a time of 31:58 to place 47th and Solomon Gardea crossed the finish line at 32:41. Freshmen Juan Blanco and Ramon Garcia posted a time of 32:52 and 34:55, respectively.  

Kimaiyo and Rotich are likely headed to the NCAA Cross Country Championships with individual bids and all-region honors made official tomorrow afternoon.
