Track and Field Lands Two on All-Academic Team

EL PASO - Former UTEP track and field standouts Nina Schvedoff and Keisha Walkes were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association 2008 Division I All-Academic Track and Field team on Tuesday.
The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
Schvedoff broke her own school record three times in the 20-pound weight throw with a best of 62.3 3/4 (18.99) during the indoor season on her way to capturing the C-USA crown.
The Finland native earned regional marks in the hammer at every regular-season outdoor meet and obtained her third consecutive league title. She finished third at the NCAA Midwest Regional competition, which qualified her for the NCAA Championships.
A business management major, Schevedoff holds a 3.73 cumulative grade point average.
Walkes ended her career as an All-American at the NCAA Outdoor Championships finishing seventh in the women's shot put final.
Walkes posted two NCAA Provisional marks in shot put during the indoor season, including a school-record 53-2 3/4 (16.22) at the NCAA Qualifiers.
During the outdoor season, Walkes recorded NCAA regional marks in shot put at every meet. A transfer from Missouri State, Walkes bested her personal record in every outing, culminating with a 53-8 1/1 (16.37) mark at the NCAA Championships.
Additionally, she posted two NCAA regional marks in discus to advance to the NCAA Midwest Regional.
The Barbados native received her degree in biology, with a minor in chemistry. She maintained a 4.0 cumulative grade point average throughout her collegiate career.
