Eight Miners Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

EL PASO – Eight Miners are selected to the 2012 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I All-Academic team on Wednesday morning.
UTEP lead the way for Conference USA with Taylor Gunn, Janice Jackson, Risper Kimaiyo, Marine Menez, Samantha Sharper , Richard Olsson, Kyron Joseph and Solomon Gardea earning USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
Gunn took silver in the discus throw at her first C-USA Outdoor Championships with a toss of 48.35m. The freshman was ranked 57th in the nation in the discus with a personal-best of 50.56m registered at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open. Gunn competed in the discus at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships.
Jackson was also named to the C-USA All-Academic team after earning a 3.8 GPA in multidisciplinary studies. The sophomore appeared on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll and is a C-USA Academic Medal Award winner. Jackson competed in the 100m hurdles at the NCAA Championships. The Jamaican native posted the second-fastest time in program history in the 100m hurdles (13.24) at the NCAA West Preliminary. Jackson took bronze at the C-USA Championships in the women’s 100m hurdles.
With a 3.61 GPA in nursing, Kimaiyo is making her third appearance on the USTFCCCA All-Academic team. The junior set a meet record at the 2012 C-USA Indoor Championships in the women’s 5,000m claiming gold for the second consecutive year with a time of 16:10.37. The All-American was ranked 19th in the nation with a personal-best of 16:04.88 in the 5,000m posted at the Husky Classic.
Menez is making her first appearance on the All-Academic team with a 3.8 GPA in multidisciplinary studies. The senior took bronze at the C-USA Indoor Championships in the pentathlon with 3,756 points. Menez finished fourth overall in the heptathlon with a total of 5,074 points at the C-USA Outdoor Championships.
For junior, Sharper this is her first USTFCCCA All-Academic honor with a 3.83 GPA. Sharper is receiving her Masters in Special Education and also is a C-USA Academic Medal Award winner. The junior clocked in a personal-best of 13:75 and 1:01.11 at the C-USA Championships in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles, respectively. Sharper competed at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships in the 100m hurdles.
With a 4.0 GPA in multidisciplinary studies, Olsson is making his second appearance on the All-Academic Team. The sophomore was named to the 2011 C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was an Academic Medal recipient. He ranks 20th in the nation and leads the conference in the men's javelin with a personal-best throw of 71.58m (234-10) posted at the UTEP Springtime Meet. Olsson took bronze in the event at the 2012 C-USA Outdoor Championships with a toss of 66.10m (216-10), earning him All-C-USA third team honors.
Joseph is making his first USTFCCCA All-Academic team appearance with a 3.8 GPA as he studies multidisciplinary studies. As a transfer from Kentucky, Joseph aided the men’s 4x100m relay to a 14th place finish at the NCAA West Preliminary meet posting a time of 40.20. That same relay team also made it on the podium at the C-USA Outdoor Championships finishing second with a time of 40.50.
As a junior, this will be Gardea’s first time earning USTFCCCA honors while being a part of the men’s cross country and track and field teams. This season he was able to record a personal-best of 29:25.73 in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational. That time earned Gardea his first qualification to the NCAA West Preliminary meet where he clocked in a time of 32:35.79.
