Three Miners Earn C-USA All-Academic Team Honors

EL PASO – UTEP’s Richard Olsson, Janice Jackson and Marine Menez have been selected to the 2012 Conference USA Track and Field All-Academic Teams voted by the league’s sports information directors.

With a 4.0 GPA in multidisciplinary studies, Olsson is making his first appearance on the C-USA All-Academic Team. The sophomore was named to the 2011 C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was an Academic Medal recipient. He ranks 20th in the nation and leads the conference in the men's javelin with a personal-best throw of 71.58m (234-10) posted at the UTEP Springtime Meet. Olsson took bronze in the event at the 2012 C-USA Outdoor Championships with a toss of 66.10m (216-10), earning him All-C-USA third team honors.

On the women’s side, Jackson and Menez are awarded their first academic team accolade after earning a 3.8 GPA in multidisciplinary studies. Both have appeared on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll and been a C-USA Academic Medal Award winner.

Jackson will be representing the Miners at the NCAA Championships in the 100m hurdles tomorrow at 7:10 p.m. (CT). The sophomore holds the second-fastest time in program history at the NCAA West Preliminary with a time of 13.24 in the 100m hurdles. She posted the 25th fastest time in the nation and the third best in C-USA in the 100m hurdles at the C-USA Championships with a personal-best of 13.27. Jackson also took silver at the C-USA Indoor Championships in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.36.

Menez took bronze at the C-USA Indoor Championships in the pentathlon with 3,756 points and finished fourth at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon with a total of 5,074 points. She assisted the 4x100m relay team to a fourth-place finish at the Drake Relays with a time of 45.57.

All 24 honorees boast academic marks better than 3.40 and all 12 women sport a 3.7 or better GPAs. Five finished the academic year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Jackson and Anthony Rotich will be competing at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships tomorrow night. The four day event will be hosted by Drake at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, June 6-9.
