Miners Open Strong At NCAA Midwest Regional
UTEP had two athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships and 10 more advance through the preliminaries of the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday in Austin, Texas.
Junior Erma Gene Evans place second in the javelin to secure her position at the national championships. She marked 173-7 (52.90) behind Dana Pounds of Air Force.
All-American Mickael Hanany is expected to have added his name to the national roster in the long jump. He placed sixth with a leap of 25-5 1/2 (7.76), which will secure him an at-large bid on Monday.
UTEP had an overall successful day advancing all but two individuals and one relay into Saturday’s finals.
Churandy Martina won his heats in both the 100-meter dash (10.22) and the 200-meter dash (20.71) to advance.
All-American Daniel Ward additionally qualified in the 200, running 20.87 to win his heat as well.
Martina and Ward joined with Yinka Bello and John Alipio to make up the 400-meter relay, which ran 39.53 to move on with the fifth-fastest time.
Dominic Kiprono Tanui and Elias Koech placed second and fifth in their heat to qualify in the 800-meter run. Tanui ran 1:47.49 and Koech crossed in 1:48.54.
El Paso native Correy Harrison will have to wait until Monday to find out if he will get an at-large bid in the discus. Harrison was 11th with a mark of 177-6 (54.11).
Freshman Oludamola Osayomi was second in her heats of the 100 (11.16) and the 200 (23.20) to make the finals.
In the 800, Fatimoh Muhammed ran 2:07.72 and Jenny Holmroos finished in 2:08.23 to take the top spot in their heats to automatically to move on.
