Miners Set for Drake Relays

El Paso – After a two week hiatus, the UTEP track and field team is ready to take the track once again at the high acclaimed Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Last season, Jackson clocked in a season-best time of 13.26 in the 100m hurdles earning her first crown at Drake Relays. The All-American heads into the meet ranked 11th in the nation and second in Conference USA.Most recently Jackson claimed the crown in the event at the UTEP invitational with a time of 13.12. Teammate Kerekes followed in at fourth with a time of 14.05.
Representing the Orange and Blue in the 110m hurdles is Sven Zeller. The sophomore captured gold in the 110m hurdles at the UTEP Invitational with a personal best of 14.09, ranking him sixth in C-USA action. The German native will look to continue his success as he takes to the track at 8:45 a.m.
On the sprints side, Reginald Hinson will take to the track in the 100m dash prelims at 11:33 p.m.
The Miners will round out the track events with squads competing in the men’s 4x200m relay as well as prelims for both the men’s and women’s 4x100 and, 4x400m relays.
Leading the Orange and Blue on the field is Taylor Gunn. The junior garnered gold and bronze-medal finishes in the hammer throw and discus throw at the UTEP Invitational. Gunn also earned C-USA recognition as she recorded a personal-best toss of 52.44m (172-0.56) in the hammer throw placing her fifth in the conference. The thrower will take to the field in the women’s discus throw on Friday at 12 p.m. and the women’s hammer throw on Saturday at 8 a.m.
The men will be represented by Brandon Moss in the long jump. The C-USA Bronze Medalist registered a personal-best leap of 7.37m (24-2.25) at the UTEP Invitational placing fifth in conference.
UTEP will start off Saturday’s competition with the men’s distance medley at 11:40 p.m.
Roberto Camacho will be follow at 12:23 p.m. in the men’s 400m hurdles. The junior-transfer currently ranks fourth in C-USA and 37th in the nation for his silver medal performance of 51.81 registered at the UTEP Invitational.
On the field NCAA Silver-Medalist Mark Jackson is set to compete in the triple jump for the first time this season. Last year, the All-American posted the third-best mark in the nation with a personal best mark of 16.19m (53-01.50) set in his fourth attempt on the evening.
Competing for the women in the triple jump is Nickevea Wilson. The All-American ranks ninth in the nation and second in Conference USA with her first-place leap13.07m (42-10.57) registered at the UTEP Invitational. The Jamaican native is set to start at 9 a.m.
El Paso native Carlos Hernandez will round out the field competition for the Miners in the high jump at 9 a.m. The High Jumper claimed his first crown with the Miners with a mark of 2.05m (6-8.75) recorded at the UTEP Invitational.
