Miners Return to Action at Drake Relays

El Paso - The UTEP track and field team is ready to take the track once again at the annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Kicking off the meet for the Miners will be All-American Risper Kimaiyo in the women's 5,000m scheduled on Thursday at 8:40 p.m. (CDT). This will be the second time this season that the senior will race in the 5,000m. Kimaiyo posted the second-fastest time in program history (15:48.14) in the 5,000m in 2011. She is looking to break her record after having to sit out last season due to an injury.

Also representing the Miners on the track on Thursday at 9:05 p.m. will be Conference USA Athlete of the Week, Anthony Rotich. The distance runner clocked in the second-fastest time in the nation (8:37.47) in the 3,000m steeplechase last week at the Mt. SAC Relays. The sophomore will be looking to improve his time in the 5,000m at Drake Relays. The All-American recorded the fourth-best time in program history in the 5,000m earlier this season. His time also secured him the No. 4 spot in the nation (13:34.84) posted at the Stanford Invitational.

On Friday, Miners Brianna McGhee, Janice Jackson and Samantha Sharper will be participating in the women's 100m hurdle prelims set to start at 9:35 a.m. Jackson heads into the meet ranked 13th nationally with a time of 13.24 registered at the 2013Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

Kicking off the field events for UTEP will be junior Richard Olsson in the javelin throw. The last time out the throw set a personal best of 72.53m which is also ranks him ninth in the nation, thus far. The junior will take the field at 10:45 a.m. at Drake Stadium.



The women's 4x100m relay team consisting of McGhee, Yolanda Suggs, Jackson and Magen Del Pino will then take the track at 10:58 a.m. The squad continues improving every time they compete. The last time out, they registered a time of 3:52.42 at the UTEP Invitational.

The men's team will feature two relays, the distance medley relay and the 4x400m relay on Friday.

The distance team will include Elkana Rotich, Abiola Onakoya, Daniel Tarango and AnthonyRotich.  The last time the Miners competed in this relay was during the indoor season, where the squad earned a silver medal at the Conference USA Championships. The group is scheduled tocompete at 11:25 a.m. racing against some of the best teams in the nation.

The men's 4x400m relay prelims is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. and will feature Carnell Horn, A-Shawni Mitchell, Daniel Tarango and Abiola Onakoya. The team clocked in a season best time of 3:08.03 at Texas Realys. The squad will look to continue their success as they face some tough competition at Drake Relays.

Wrapping up the women's day of action, will be the 100m dash and discus throw. Representing the Miners in the 100m at 12:15 p.m. will be seniors Magen Del Pino and Yolanda Suggs. Sophomore Taylor Gunn will be partaking in the discus at 2:00 p.m.
