The UTEP men’s track and field team was ranked tied for third with Arkansas in the latest national poll released by Trackwire.com.

UTEP and Arkansas garnered 47 points following Florida State (60 points) and LSU (48 points). The Miners were also ranked fourth by the USTFCCCA.

The Miners gained their ranking with 10 individuals and one relay being picked in the website’s Dandy Dozen.

Freshman Churandy Martina, who holds the nation’s fastest time in the 100-meter dash and the third-quickest time in the 200-meter dash, is the favorite in the 100 and picked sixth in the 200. Martina has run 10.04 and 20.27 this season the two events.

Martina teams up with Yinka Bello, Daniel Ward and John Alipio to make up the 400-meter relay which is currently ranked fourth. The Miners have run the NCAA’s second-fastest time in 39.41.

Defending NCAA champion Mircea Bogdan is tabbed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while sophomore Patrick Mutai is ranked fifth. Both will run in the event at the Cardinal Invitational in Stanford, Calif., on April 30.

Mickael Hanany, who was named the C-USA Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, is listed third in the high jump. Hanany has leaped 7-5 (2.26) this season to tie him second in the NCAA in 2006.

The duo of Dominic Kiprono Tanui and Elias Koech rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 800-meter run. They will next run in the special final of the 800 at the Drake Relays on April 29.

In addition, Alex van der Merwe has been chosen 11th in the javelin.

On the women’s side, Jenny Holmroos and Erma Gene Evans continue to rank among the nation’s top 12.

Holmroos -- the 2006 UTEP Female Athlete of the Year -- is tabbed to finished sixth in the 800. She will run her first 800 of the season in the special final of the Drake Relays on April 29 along with teammate and two-time NCAA qualifier Fatimoh Muhammed.

Evans broken her Saint Lucia national record in the javelin for the third time since coming to UTEP last weekend at the UTEP Invitational. Her throw of 177-9 (54.19) improved her PR by five feet and is the fifth-best throw in the NCAA in 2006. She is ranked seventh in Trackwire.
