UTEP Set for Texas Tech Open

El Paso – 29 Miners will travel to Lubbock, Texas to compete in the Texas Tech Open on Saturday at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex.
The track and field team will be challenging the No. 13 Lady Raiders and No. 14 Red Raiders this weekend. The men’s squad heads into the third week of the outdoor season ranked 39th nationally.
Kicking off the meet on the men’s side is freshman Sven Zeller taking the track in the 110m hurdles and 200m. The newcomer is ranked fourth in the Conference USA performance list in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.52 (W: 2.5) posted at the UTEP Springtime. The Igging, Germany nativealso has blazed out of the blocks clocking in the seventh-best time of 21.53 (W: 6.3) in the 200m in the home meet.
The men’s 100m with include five Miners: Andrew Castillo, Kristian Dillard, DeShawn Grayson, Brandon Jones and Anthony Wright. Leading the squad in the event is 2012 Conference USA Champion Anthony Wright. The senior currently is fourth in the league in the 100m with a time of 10.59 (W: 3.2).
UTEP football player, Grayson will also represent the Orange and Blue in the event after suffering a minor injury at the UTEP Springtimemeet. The senior will be looking to record a top conference time for the Miners.
The men’s 800m run is made up of three El Paso natives, Ramon Garcia, Daniel Tarango and Manuel Lopez. Garcia opened the season with a time of 2:00.38, while Lopez posted a time of 2:04.22. This will be the first time that Tarango participates in the 800m this season.
On the women’s side, the triple jump will prove to be a threat with five Miners taking the field this weekend. Taking the track for the first time this outdoor season will be Nickevea Wilson. The newcomer took gold during the indoor season with a leap of 12.92m (42-04.75).
El Paso native Jallycia Pearson will also be partaking in the event. The sophomore finished third in the C-USA Indoor Championships with a personal best of 12.32m (40-05.00).
On the distance side, duo Jackline Ekai and Mariah Bowers will race in the 800m run. Ekai finished first at the UTEP Springtime meet clocking in a time of 2:18.31 in the 800m. Bowers crossed the finish line third overall at the opening meet with a time of 2:21.16.
