UTEP Primed For Texas Tech Open

EL PASO – UTEP track & field will travel to Lubbock, Texas to compete in the Texas Tech Open on Saturday at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex.

The Miners will be challenging the nationally ranked No. 14 Red Raiders and No. 16 Lady Raiders this weekend. The men’s squad heads into the third week of the outdoor season ranked 29th nationally.

Leading the men this weekend is El Paso native Daniel Tarango. Last year, the sophomore dominated the competition in the 800m run as he clocked in a time of 1:51.58.The distance runner not only secured a first place finish but also the top spot in Conference USA garnering him his first career C-USA Athlete of the Week honors. Tarango will look to repeat his success in the event as he takes to the track on Saturday.

The men’s 100m will include five Miners: Carlos Cavazos, Reginald Hinson, Mark Jackson, Brandon Jones and Zachary Newman. Leading the Orange and Blue in the event is senior captain Mark Jackson. The All-American placed third in the 100m dash at the 2013 C-USA Outdoor Championships with a season-best of 10.44. This is the first time he will compete in the event this season.

In the hurdles, duo Roberto Camacho and Tommy McCoy will race in the 400m hurdles while Sven Zeller will compete in 110m hurdles. Camacho currently ranks third in the league and 17th in the nation for his showing at the UTEP Springtime where he clocked in a personal-best time of 51.95 in the 400m hurdles. McCoy follows in at No.12 in conference with a time of 54.77 also posted at the UTEP Springtime.


 

 

Sven Zeller also garnered league recognition with a first-place finish of 14.14 in the 110m hurdles registered at the UTEP Springtime. The sophomore currently holds the third-best time in C-USA action.

Turning to the women, the discus throw will prove to be a threat with five Miners taking the field at 1 p.m. (MT) this Saturday. Freshman Samantha Hall opened the season with a toss of 48.45m (158-11) at the UTEP Springtime ranking her second in conference.

Competing for the first time this outdoor season will be Taylor Gunn. The junior took bronze at the 2013 C-USA Outdoor Championships with a toss of 49.79m (163-04).  Also competing in the discus throw are Adebola Akomolafe, Fayon Gonzalez and Aisha Lee.

El Paso native Monica Lopez will represent the Miners in the triple jump at 2 p.m. The junior opened the season claiming gold in the event at the UTEP Springtime with a leap of 11.97m (39-03.25).

On the track, UTEP’s strength will be in the 100m hurdles as five Miners are set to contest for the top spot. Junior transfer Anna-Kay James ranks 15th nationally with her gold-medal performance of 13.36 set at the UTEP Springtime.

Teammate Greta Kerekes follows in at No.6 in conference with her bronze finish of 13.78 also registered at UTEP’s home opener.
