Bogdan Takes Steeplechase at Texas Relays
Sophomore Mircea Bogdan kept UTEP's successful tradition alive in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, by becoming the ninth Miner to take a event title in the last 13 years.
Bogdan ran second most of the race to Texas' Mark Floreani, before making a move over the final water jump with 150 meters to go.
In this stretch, Bogdan blew past Floreani and Hardin University's Peter Kosgei to finish in a regional qualifying time of 8:48.10. Floreani followed in 8:51.70, while Kosgei crossed in 8:53.63.
Earlier in the day, Desiree Crichlow fought through rainy conditions to tie for fourth in the high jump on Friday at the 77th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
Crichlow cleared heights of 5-6 (1.68) and 5-8 (1.73) on her first attempts. Then missed two tries at 5-10 (1.78) before pulling out of the competition due to inclement weather.
UCLA's Gordon Sheena cleared 5-11 1/4 (1.81) to take the competition's title.
El Paso natives Mark Torres and Correy Harrison finished seventh and eighth in the B final of the discus, respectively. Torres, who was the ninth and final thrower to make the finals, tossed 169-7 (51.69) on his fourth attempt to move into seventh position. Harrison had a best of 168-11 (51.50).
Byon Tate of Texas State was the Texas Relay champion, throwing 184-4 (56.20).
In the morning, UTEP's 400-meter relay, made up of Yinka Bello, Bryan Sears, Ryan Shields and Daniel Ward, eased into the finals with the fourth-fastest time in the preliminaries.
"We had bad handoffs all around, but the important thing is we got to the finals," said head coach Bob Kitchens. "Bryan (Sears) got off too slow and Ryan (Shields) took off too fast. We are just are going to have to do better in the finals."
UTEP ran in swiftest heat of the day, taking second to LSU's 39.23. The Miners crossed in 40.03.
Brianna Houston also ran in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles. She failed to qualify for the finals, running 14.18.
The Relays conclude on Saturday.
