Track and Field Travels to Texas Relays

El Paso – The UTEP track and field heads to Austin, Texas to compete in the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

16 Miners are set to represent the Orange and Blue in the annual meet that features some of the top runners in the nation.

Kicking of the meet for UTEP will be Demetris Elia with the hammer throw at 2:30 p.m. (MT). The sophomore registered a personal best at the Miners first meet with a toss of 61.03m (200-03). The thrower not only took first place at the UTEP Springtime meet, but also posted the 21st best mark in the nation thus far in the event.

Returning to the field for the Miners this season is Richard Olsson in the javelin throw. The junior suffered an injury last season at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships and was unable to compete in the Orange and Blue. Prior to the damage, Olsson was ranked 20th in the nation in the javelin with a personalbest of 71.58m (234-10) recorded at the 2012 UTEP Springtime meet. The thrower will be competing Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Wrapping up the men’s field events is Mark Jackson in the triple jump Friday at 1 p.m. The junior opened the season with a second place finish at the home meet with a leap of 15.67m (51-05.00) W: 4.9. Jackson currently sits first in the Conference USA performance list in the event.

Three relay teams will be taking the track for the UTEP men’s team in the 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m. The 4x100m relay prelims will kickoff the running events on Friday at 8:35 a.m., which will feature Jackson, Kyron Joseph, Kristian Dillard and Anthony Wright.



On thewomen’s side, Samantha Sharper will start the meet for the Miners with the 400m hurdles prelims on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

The 100m hurdles prelims on Friday morning will feature three UTEP competitors: Janice Jackson, Brianna McGhee and Sharper. Jackson heads into the meet ranked first in the league in the event with a time of 13.15 W: 5.8 posted at the UTEP Springtime meet. McGhee is third in the conference with a time of 13.30 W: 5.8 recorded at the home meet.

Magen Del Pino and Yolanda Suggs will be running in the women’s 100m on Friday. Del Pino currently is ranked fifth in the TFRRS performance list with an altitude time of 11.40 W: 3.7. Suggs is ranked third in C-USA in the 100m with an altitude time of 11.47 W: 3.7.

The field will include newcomer Nickevea Wilson, who will compete in the Orange and Blue for the first time this outdoor season in the women’s triple jump.

Also highlighting the women’s team is sophomore Taylor Gunn, who will take the field in the discus throw. Gunn comes into the meet after claiming two first place finishes at the UTEP Springtime meet in the discus and shot put. The thrower had a toss of 48.49m (159-01) in the discus last weekend.

The women’s team will be participating in the 4x100m relay and the 4x200m relay on Friday morning. The 4x100m relay will include McGhee, Suggs, Jackson and Del Pino.
