UTEP Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Kidd Field

El PASO - The UTEP track and field team will open the 2012 outdoor season on Saturday at the UTEP Springtime at Kidd Field.

The Miners will host Texas Tech, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oral Robert’s, West Texas A&M, Eastern New Mexico, New Mexico Junior College, South Plains Community Collage and Western Texas College.

Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw. Running events are scheduled for 3 p.m. starting with the women’s 4x100m relay.

The women’s team will open the 2012 outdoor slate, ranked 23rd in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason rankings.

All-Americans Endurance Abinuwa and Risper Kimaiyo lead the women’s team of 22 scheduled to compete this outdoor season.

Abinuwa earned second team All-American honors at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships where she clocked in a time of 54.50 in the women’ 400m. The senior posted a season-best of 53.33 in the 400m at the 2012 Texas A&M Invitational. Abinuwa will be competing in the 4x100m relay set to start at 3 p.m. and the 100m at 4:20 p.m.

All-American Risper Kimaiyo sets a meet record at the 2012 Conference USA Indoor Championships in the women’s 5,000m dash clocking in a time of 16:10.37. The senior surpassed her own meet record posted at last year’s championship. Kimaiyo took gold in the 5,000m and bronze in the 3,00m at the 2012 C-USA Championships. The Kenyan native will be participating in the women’s 1,500m run.

Highlighting the group of Miners is Suji Adeniyan, who earned 2011 USTFCCCA All-American honorable mention in the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay. The senior led the men’s 4x400m relay to a fourth-place finish at the 2011 Drake Relays posting a personal-best of 3:07.81. The Nigerian native will be competing in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.



Junior Anthony Wright comes of a successful indoor season clocking in a personal-best of 6.74 in the 60m dash at the 2012 C-USA Championships taking gold and earning a spot in the school recordbook. Wright earned 2011 USTFCCCA All-American honorable mention as a member of the 4x100m relay squad that finished 19th at the 2011 NCAA Championships posting a time of 40.37. The junior will represent the Miners in the 4x100m relay scheduled to begin at 3:05 p.m. and the 200m at 5:50 p.m.

The men’s 4x400m relay team took gold at the 2012 Indoor Conference USA Championships. The relay team (A-Shawni Mitchell, Abiola Onakoya, Shane Hamm, Curtis Kock) clock in a time of 3:11.64 breaking the meet record of 3:13.06 set by TCU in 2003. The squad will be taking the track in the last event of the day set to kickoff at 6:55 p.m.

The Miners will return to competition on Wednesday, March 28 at the 2012 Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
