Miners Set to Compete at C-USA Indoor Championships

EL PASO – The UTEP track and field teams head to Birmingham, Ala., this weekend to compete in the 2012 Conference USA Indoor Championship hosted by UAB at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Women Entries

All-American Endurance Abinuwa holds the top seed in the 400m for her performance at the Texas A&M Invitational where she posted the 10th-best mark in the nation. The senior ranks second and third in school recordbooks with times of 52.99 (2/12/11) and 53.33 (2/11/12), respectively. Abinuwa will also be competing in the 60m dash taking on the UCF trio (Octavious Freeman, Aurieyall Scott and Dominique Booker). The Nigerian native is ranked 15th in the country with a time of 7.35 recorded at the Blue and Orange Opener.

Senior Risper Kimaiyo looks to defend her title in the women’s 5,000m going in ranked first in the league and 15th nationally. The All-American registered a personal-best of 16:04.88 in the 5,000m at the Husky Classic (2/10). Kimaiyo will also participate in the 3,000m where she is ranked seventh in the Mountain Region with a time of 9:32.63.

Clemson transfer Janice Jackson will lead the women’s 60m hurdles team on Saturday at 5 p.m. (CT). The sophomore ranks third in the league going into the championship having ran a time of 8.38 at the Texas A&M Invitational.


 

 

Rounding out the women’s squad is Marine Menez, Jallycia Pearson, Tako Niare and Aeisha McDavid, the foursome will participate in the pentathlon on Saturday. Menez currently ranks second in the event with 3,686 points recorded at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.

Men Entries

The men’s distance team has proven to be a threat on the track this year with newcomer Anthony Rotich leading the way for the Miners. The freshman is ranked first in C-USA and 24th in the country in the 5,000m with a time of 14:02.16 posted at the Husky Classic. Rotich is also a contender in the 3,000m currently sitting in the No. 3 spot in the league with a time of 8:10.15.

Senior Justice Chirchir the 2011 C-USA Cross Country Champion, looks to be a threat in the men’s mile. He recorded a personal-best of 4:03.96 at the Texas A&M Invitational and is currently ranked third in C-USA in the mile. Chirchir will also run the 3,000m and 5,000m this weekend.

El Paso native Solomon Gardea will run the 3,000 and 5,000m for the Miners. Gardea registered a personal-best of 14:32.74 in the 5,000m at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational ranking second in C-USA.

Junior Anthony Wright will lead the sprints team in the 60m and 200m dash. Wright posted the 10th-best time in program history in the men’s 60m dash with a time of 6.78 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. He registered a season-best performance in the 200m dash at the Texas A&M Invitational with a time of 21.74 placing him in third in the league overall.

Wrapping up the men’s side is the 4x400m relay team, which recorded a season-best time of 3:12.98 (A-Shawni Mitchell, Abiola Onakoya, Shane Hamm and Curtis Kock) at the Texas A&M Invitational. The squad will compete in the second heat, racing against East Carolina, Tulsa and Houston.
