Miners Conclude First Day of Action at Don Kirby Invitational

Albuquerque, N.M.- The UTEP Track and Field Team wrapped up the first day of action at the Don Kirby T&F Elite Invitational in the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday.

Leading the Miners was distance runner Elphas Maiyo, who paced himself into a third place finish in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:41.83. Teammate Evans Kiprono followed with a time of 9:09.55.

Continuing the success was Brandon Moss. The sophomore won his first medal of the season as he recorded a mark of 7.29m (23-11.00) in the long jump. Moss finished third out of 28 jumpers.

Senior Mark Jacksonposted a jump of 7.40m (24-03.50) to place fourth in the men’s invitational long jump.

In the high jump Carlos Hernandez placed eighth out of 16 participants with a jump of 2.08m (6-09.75).

On the sprints side, Abiola Onakoya registered a time of 21.48 in the 200m dash; the senior finished 11th out of 67 sprinters.

Commanding the track for the women were Janice Jackson and Florence Uwakwe. The two sprinters finished in the top ten in the 200m dash with times of 24.02 and 24.05. Jackson who placed seventh ranks 43rd nationally and first in Conference USA.

On the field, Nickevea Wilson placed ninth out of 28 jumpers as she recorded a mark of 5.77m (18-11.25) in the long jump.

Fayon Gonzales posted a throw of 14.83m (48-08.00) in the women’s weight throw.
