Miners Ready to Compete at Don Kirby T&F Elite Invitational

El Paso – UTEP’s track and field team will take the track this weekend at the Don Kirby T&F Elite Invitational for the final time before competing at the Conference USA Championships.

In Albuquerque, N.M., the Miners will be taking on Akron, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas State, California, Colorado, Grand Canyon, Illinois State, Liberty, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Northern Arizona, Ohio State, Oregon, San Diego St., South Florida, Southern Utah, Stanford, Texas Tech, UCLA, USC, Utah State, UTEP, Washington St., Wayland Baptist and Wyoming.

Kicking off the field events for the men will be Andres Estrada, Mark Jackson, Brandon Jones, Brandon Moss, and Zachary Newman in the long jump at 4: 30 p.m. (MT) on Friday. Jackson currently holds the second top mark in the league and the 13th in the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) with a jump of 7.61m (24-11.75) registered at the Texas A&M Invitational. The senior is followed by teammate Moss, who posted a leap of 7.33m (24-0.75) recorded at the UNM Cherry and Silver Invitational. Moss is currently ranked fourth in Conference USA

Also representing the Miners on the field will be Carlos Hernandez in the high jump. Hernandez is tied for second in C-USA with a mark of 2.10m (6-10.75) posted at the Cherry and Silver Invitational.

On the track, James Bias, Reginald Hinson, Carnell Horn, Mark Jackson, Zachary Newman, Abiola Onakoya, Sven Zellner, and Carlos Cavazos will be running the 200m dash at 5:50 p.m. (MT) on Friday. Onakoya finished tenth at the Cherry & Silver Invitational with a time of 21.56, which ranks fifth in the league.



Elphas Maiyo and Evans Kiprono will represent UTEP’s distance squad in the 3,000m at 6:40 p.m. (MT). Maiyo and Kiprono are currently ranked in the top 20 in the league with times of 8:34.58 and 8:49.03 registered at the Cherry & Silver Invitational.

On Saturday, El Paso native Daniel Tarango will compete in the 800m run at 2:00 p.m. (MT).

On the women’s side, Janice Jackson, Aiyanna Stiverne, and Florence Uwake will participate in the 200m dash at 6:15 p.m. (MT) on Friday. Jackson is ranked second in C-USA in the event with an altitude time of 24.48 posted at the Miners’ first meet of the season.

Opening the field events for the women will be Fayon Gonzales in the weight throw at 4 p.m. (MT) Friday. Last weekend, the freshman posted a personal best of 15.18m (49-9.75) at the Texas A&M Invitational.

Nickevea Wilson will represent the Orange and Blue in the triple jump at 4:30 p.m. (MT) on Friday. The sophomore is ranked third in C-USA with 6.01 m (19-8.75) registered at the Lobo Collegiate Open.

Wilson will also be competing in the triple jump alongside Rahelys Barsey, Monica Lopez, Aeisha McDavid, and Jallycia Pearson at 11 a.m. (MT) on Saturday. Wilson holds the top spot in conference and the 11th nationally with a mark of 12.89m (42-3.5) recorded at the Cherry & Silver Invitational.

Both squads will conclude the competition with the 4x400m relay projected to start at around 2:40 p.m. (MT) on Saturday.
