EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP track and field teams will travel south as they take part in the Texas A&M Invitational Friday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at the McFerrin Athletic Center in College Station, Texas.
The No. 23 women’s team will join a field of 12 ranked teams that include three top-ten teams No. 1 Texas A&M women’s team, No. 7 Texas and No. 10 Arizona State. The men will face off against No. 2 Arizona State, No. 4 Texas A&M, No. 7 Texas and No. 9 Texas Tech. Also ranked are the No. 21 Baylor men and No. 25 women, No. 22 Miami women and the No. 14 Texas Tech men’s team.
Dominic Tanui will go for his third consecutive gold in the 800-meter race. Tanui won the event last week at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational with a time of 1:50.68. He recorded a time of 1:54.17 as the Miners opened the indoor season at the Texas Tech Invitational on January 24. The men’s 800m is scheduled for Saturday at 1:25 p.m. (MT).
Gladys Nwaubani, a winner in the 60-meter dash at last week’s meet, will go head-to-head with Miami’s Ti’erra Brown. Brown currently has the best time in the world in the 60m.
Sprinter Ronalds Arajs will go into Friday’s meet in an attempt to better his time in the 60-meter race. Arajs recorded Conference-USA’s fastest time in the event (6.76) last week.
Nicodemus Ng’etich also has a C-USA best with 8:13.88 in the 3,000-meter run will compete with teammate Justice Chirchir on Saturday afternoon.
Conference USA teams Rice, Houston and SMU will join the Miners this weekend. Louisiana Tech, Northwestern Louisiana, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas Sate, TCU, UT-Pan American and UT-Arlington will also take part in the two-day meet.
The Texas A&M Invitational will be the last tune-up for the Miners as they prepare for C-USA Championships on Feb. 27-28 in Houston, Texas
