Miners Take on Top Ranked Texas A&M

El Paso – After a two-week hiatus the UTEP track and field team is prepared to take the track this weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational.

The Miners will be taking on nationally ranked Texas A&M (Men-fourth and Women-third), LSU (Women-ninth), and UCLA (Women-10th), along with Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, TCU, and Tennessee.

Kicking off the competition for the Miners will be Jallycia Pearson in the pentathlon at 2:30 p.m. (MT). Competing in the pentathlon for the first time this season the junior will compete in a series of events including 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and a 800m run.

Wrapping up the competition on Friday will Cosmas Boit, Abiola Onakoya, Daniel Tarango, and Anthony Rotich in the 4,000m distance medley relay at 5:45 p.m. (MT).

On Saturday Rotich and Boit will return to the track for the mile run at 3:43 p.m. (MT). Rotich posted a personal best of 4:01.11 (@ 3:55.86) and is currently ranked first in the nation and C-USA. The junior is followed close behind by teammate Boit, who is ranked second the nation and C-USA with a personal best of 4:07.56 posted at the Lobo Collegiate Open.

On the sprints side, Abiola Onakoya will take the track for the Miners in 400m dash at 2:05 p.m. (MT). Onakoya posted a season best of 47.43 at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational ranking him 43rd in the nation and third in C-USA.

Adding strength to the sprints squad will be Mark Jackson in the 60m dash at 11:55 a.m. (MT). The sprinter opened the season with a finish of 6.76 at the Lobo Collegiate Open ranking him 38th in the nation and third in C-USA.

Jackson will also compete in the long jump for the first time this season. Last season, the senior claimed the crown in the long jump with a leap of 7.54m (24-09.00) at the C-USA Championships.

On the women’s side, Janice Jackson, Anna-Kay James, and Greta Kerekes will be competing in the 60m hurdles at 11:30 p.m. (MT). Jackson is ranked fifth in the nation in the event with a time of 8.09 (@8.11) posted at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational.

Newcomer Anna-Kay James clocked in a personal-best of 8.42 (2 8.44) in the 60m hurdles at the Miners’ last meet. Her time earned her the 36th spot in the national rankings and the fifth spot in C-USA.

On the field, Nickevea Wilson, Rahelys Barsey, and Aeisha McDavid will represent UTEP in the triple jump at 2:15 p.m. (MT). Wilson jumped a season best of 12.89m at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational ranking her ninth nationally, and first in C-USA.

Both squads will conclude the competition with the 4x400m relay projected to start at around 5:00 p.m.
