Miners Ready to Compete at the Cherry & Silver Invitational

El Paso- The Miners return to action at the New Mexico Cherry & Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. on Friday and Saturday at the Convention Center.
Leading the women this weekend is school record holder, Janice Jackson. The senior is ranked sixth in the nation in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8:22 posted at the Lobo Collegiate Open. Last season Jackson registered the fastest time in program history in the 60m hurdles (8:17) at the C-USA Championships, earning her the gold medal. The senior will be competing in the 200m dash on Friday at 6:45 p.m. and the 60m hurdle prelims on Saturday at 11:20 a.m.
Adding strength to the 60m hurdles will be Anna-Kay James. Last weekend, the Lincoln transfer claimed second place after posting a 8.43 finish.
On the field, Taylor Gunn will represent UTEP in the shot put on Saturday at 10 a.m. Gunn recorded a personal best throw of 14.77m (48-05.50) taking eighth place overall in the season opener.
Also competing in the shot put for the first time this season is Jallycia Pearson. The El Paso Native will also be taking the field in the triple jump alongside teammate Nickevea Wilson. Pearson registered a bronze medal finish last season at the C-USA Championships with a leap of 12.32m (40-05.00). Wilson ranks 20th in the nation after registering a personal best of 6.01m (19-08.75) at the Lobo Collegiate Open.
On the men’s side, Anthony Rotich will set out to capture a second crown in the mile run on Saturday at 12 p.m. Last week the junior registered the eighth-fastest time in the nation in the mile of 4:10.72. Rotich is also competing in the 3,000m run on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
Newcomer Cosmas Boit and El Paso Native Daniel Tarango will add power to UTEP’s distance squad as they both set out to compete in the 600m on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and the 800m run on Saturday at 2:20 p.m.
Senior Abiola Onakoya will run the men’s 400m dash along side A-Shawni Mitchell. In the season opener Mitchell finished third in the 600m run with a personal best of 1:20.51. The junior will also be joining Carnell Horn, James Bias, and Onakoya in one of two men’s relay teams to compete in the 4x400m relay on Saturday at 2:55 p.m.
