UTEP Women Ranked 19th in Preseason Poll

El Paso, Texas – The UTEP women’s track and field will begin the 2009 indoor season ranked 19th by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll.
“It’s nice to be ranked in the preseason,” head coach Bob Kitchens said. “We still have to go out there to compete to make it more meaningful. It’s definitely a nice tribute to our women’s team.”
The Miners concluded the 2008 indoor season with a 13th overall finish at the NCAA Championships led by Blessing Okagbare and Nelly Tchayem. Okagbare returns for to UTEP as an Olympic medalist after winning bronze in the long jump for Nigeria. The two-time indoor All-American holds UTEP’s and Conference USA records in the triple and long jumps.
Junior Shalaiyah Sommerville joins Okagbare as the second All-American in the women’s squad after earning the honor in the women’s 4x100-meter relay during the outdoor season.
UTEP will begin the 2009 season at the Texas Tech Invitational on January 24 in Lubbock, Texas.
