Okabare Takes Gold at the African Championships

El PASO – Former Miner Blessing Okabare took gold in the long jump at the 18th African Senior Athletics Championships in Port Novo, Benin Republic on Friday.

The Nigerian native earned her second medal at the 18th African Championships with a personal-best of 6.96m in the women’s long jump.

Former Miner Oludamola Osayomi led the Nigerian women’s team in the 4x100m relay. The squad (Christy Udoh, Gloria Asumnu, Osayomi and Lawretta Ozoh) took gold at the Championships clocking in a time of 43.21.

On the men’s side, Abiola Onakoya competed in the men’s 400m final and was the top Nigerian finisher crossing the finish line with a time of 46.21. The sophomore is expected to run in the men’s 4x400m relay tomorrow.

21st European Athletics Championships
Mickael Hanany took bronze in the men’s high jump at the 21st European Athletics Championships with a mark of 2.28m. The former student-athlete will represent France in the 2012 Olympics.  
Churandy Martina competed in the men’s 200m for the Netherlands. Martina finished fourth in the first round of the 200m and posted a time of 20.74. He went on to run in the semifinals and clocked in a time of 20.63. The former Miner is ranked first heading into the 200m finals tomorrow.
