Miners Qualify for the Quarterfinals at NCAA West Preliminary Championships

Austin, Texas – The UTEP track and field team advances on the first day of action of the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Championships at Myer Stadium on Thursday.
Four Miners advance to the quarterfinals in the west preliminary round in the first day of competition. Only the top three from each heat and the nine next best times qualify for the quarterfinals.
Abiola Onakoya posted a second place finish, automatically qualifying for the second round in the men’s 400m dash. The freshman set the bar high as he recorded a time of 46.74 in the first flight of the men’s 400m. Onakoya sits in the top 10 heading into the quarterfinals scheduled for tomorrow night.
Anthony Wright earns a spot in the men’s 100m quarterfinals with a personal-best of 10.38 at Myer Stadium. The junior finished fourth in the second heat of the 100m dash and 20th out of 48 runners overall. Wright will take the track tomorrow at approximately 6:30 p.m. (CT).
Richard Olsson sustained an injury on his right shoulder on his first attempt in the men’s javelin. The sophomore was unable to continue throwing at the NCAA West Preliminary and will not advance to the NCAA Championships.
On the women’s side, Al-American Endurance Abinuwa clocks in the eighth-fastest time in the 400m prelims. The senior registered a time of 53.47 qualifying for the quarterfinals set to begin tomorrow at 6:15 p.m.
Magen Del Pino clocked in a time of 11.60 in the 100m ensuring a spot in the quarterfinals tomorrow. The junior crossed the finish line fourth in the fourth heat of the event.
In order to advance to the NCAA Championships, the Miners will have to finish in the top three of their heat or post the next three best times.
UTEP will take the field tomorrow at 11 a.m. with Taylor Gunn in the women’s discus. The running events are scheduled to kick-off at 5:30 p.m. with the women’s 100m hurdles.
