Miners Post Top 10 Finishes at Drake Relays

Day 1 Results

Des Moines, Iowa – The UTEP Track and Field team opened the first day of competition at the annual Drake Relays posting top finishes.

Freshman Anthony Rotich took first place in the men’s 5,000m clocking in the nations 37th-fastest time of 13:57.09. This is the first time this outdoor season that the freshman runs the 5,000m.

Elkana Rotich crossed the finish line fifth in the 5,000m posting a time of 14:19.90, followed by El Paso native Solomon Gardea with a personal-best of 14:26.65 taking eighth.

Freshman Elphas Maiyo competed in the men’s 10,000m for the first time and finished 12th overall with a time of 30:22.40.

Senior Kathya Garcia recorded a season-best time of 16:31.69 in the women’s 5,000m finishing fourth. This is the second time this season that Garcia runs the event after having suffered an injury earlier this year.

The Miners will resume competition tomorrow starting at 9:32 a.m. (CT) with the women’s 4x100m relay.
