UTEP Distance Runners Open Drake Relays on a High Note

UTEP runners occupied three of the top four spots in the men's 5,000 meter run as the Miners opened competition at the Drake Relays on Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Japheth Ng'ojoy won the race in a time of 14:06.99, while Patrick Mutai was second in 14:08.08. Both times met the NCAA Regional qualifying standard. Nicodemus Ng'etich was fourth with a clocking of 14:15.02.

On the women's side, UTEP's Laura Clarke was 30th and Brissia Montalvo 32nd respectively in the 5,000. Clarke recorded a time of 18:11.06, and Montalvo finished in 18:58.03.

The Miners will have Teresa Contreras competing in the high jump on Friday, as well as Halimat Ismaila in the 100 meter prelims, Keisha Walkes in the discus, Quashanda Welch in the 100 meter hurdles prelims and Kelly Young in the 800 meters. UTEP's women's 4x100 and men's 4x400 relays will also be in action tomorrow. The meet runs through Saturday.

The UTEP men are ranked ninth nationally and the women are 14th.
