Kimaiyo Claims Gold at C-USA Indoor Championships

Birmingham, Ala, - All-American Risper Kimaiyo sets a meet record at the 2012 Conference USA Indoor Championships in the women’s 5,000m dash at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
The senior took gold for the second consecutive year with a time of 16:10.37, surpassing her own meet record of 16:15.98 recorded at last year’s championship. Kimaiyo will participate in the women’s 3,000m tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. (CT).
Senior Endurance Abinuwa shines in the women’s 60m dash and 400m dash prelims. The All-American posted a time of 7.42 and a time of 55.43 in the 60m and 400m, respectively. Also advancing in the women’s 60m is Yolanda Suggs finishing in seventh recording a time of 7.47. The 60m final is set to start tomorrow at 2:10 p.m. (CT).
Sophomore transfer Janice Jackson registered a time of 8.49 in the 60m hurdles finishing third overall earning her a spot in the finals scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. (CT).
Freshman A-Shawni Mitchell was the first Miner to cross the finish line in the men’s 400m dash recording a time of 48.34. Following closely behind was teammate Abiola Onakoya finishing fourth with a time of 48.34. Curtis Kock clocked in a time of 48.89 claiming sixth-place. The trio will advance to the 400m final tomorrow at 3:15 p.m. (CT).
Kristian Dillard posted a season-best of 21.81 finishing fifth in the 200m prelims, while Anthony Wright also advanced to the finals with a time of 21.83. The junior also advanced in the 60m with a mark of 6.91.
Both the men and women teams are currently in sixth-place with 19.50 and 21 points, respectively.
The Miners will resume competition tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. (CT) with the women’s shot put and will conclude at 5:20 p.m. (CT) with the men’s 4x400m relay.
